This study investigates the phonological feature known as Kutriyalukaram as it appears in the Thirukkural, a classical Tamil text. Kutriyalukaram refers to the phenomenon wherein the short vowel u, when combined with specific hard consonants (namely k, ch, ṭ, t, p, and ṟ), is articulated with a reduced syllabic duration, typically occurring at the end of olysyllabic words that follow a long syllable. The articulation of the consonant is influenced by the penultimate phoneme, resulting in phonetic variation. This qualitative linguistic analysis is based on fifteen selected couplets from the Porutpaal section of the Thirukkural. The objective is to analyze the contextual usage and phonetic patterns of kutriyalukaram, thereby enhancing the understanding of its role and significance in classical Tamil phonology and poetic expression.
