Tolkāppiyam Theory of Meym'mayakkam in Tamil Devotional Literature

Abstract

தொல்காப்பியக் கோட்பாட்டு நோக்கில் பத்தி இலக்கியங்கள் காட்டும் மெய்ம்மயக்கவிதிகளை ஆராய்தல் ஆய்வின் நோக்கமாகும். சொல்லின் ஒலிப்பு எளிமை கருதி, இன்னின்ன மெய்கள் ஒரு சொல்லில் அடுத்தடுத்து அமைதலின் முறை பற்றிய வரம்பு தொல்காப்பியத்தில் வரையறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இந்த எழுத்து முறையைப் பற்றி விளக்குவன மெய்ம்மயக்க விதிகளாகும். இன்று தமிழ் எழுதுவோர் எழுத்தில் க், த், ப் ஆகியவை சக்தி, பக்தி, முக்தி எனவாறு வேற்றுநிலை மெய்ம்மயக்கில் வருவதாகவும் இது பற்றிய அறிதல் அவர்களிடத்தில் இல்லை என்பதாகவும் இலக்கண ஆய்வாளர்கள் கருதுகின்றனர். சக்தி, பக்தி, முக்தி போன்ற சமற்கிருதச் சொற்கள் பெரும்பாலும் இறைவனைத் தொடர்புபடுத்தும் சொற்கள் என்பதால், தமிழ்ப் பத்தி இலக்கியப் பாடல்கள் ஆய்வுக்கு உட்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. க், த் என்னும் இரு மெய்களின் மெய்ம்மயக்கம் குறித்து மட்டும் ஆராய்தல் ஆய்வின் வரையறையாகக் கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. தேவாரம், திருவாசகம், திருமந்திரம், திருப்புகழ், விநாயகர் அகவல், திருவருட்பா, தாயுமானவர் பாடல்களில் சக்தி, பக்தி, முக்தி என்கிற சொற்கள் முறையே சத்தி, பத்தி, முத்தி என மெய்ம்மயக்க விதிகளுக்கு உடன்பட்டு ஆளப்பட்டிருப்பதாகச் சான்று நிறுவப்படுகிறது.

This study explores Tolkāppiyam’s Theory of Meym'mayakkam in Tamil Devotional Literature.  In Tolkāppiyam, the theory of Meym'mayakkam explains using similar consonants contemporaneously and dissimilar consonants in a word where to ease the phonetic in it. In this study, the theory of Meym'mayakkam of consonants k (க்), and t (த்) have been implemented. The Tamil grammar researchers have stated, that modern Tamil writers write words like Cakti, Pakti, and Mukti by using the k (க்),p (ப்) and t (த்) consonants which are classified as  Vēṟṟunilai meym'mayakkam.  Tamil Grammar researchers opined that modern Tamil writers write these words in this way because of their vague understanding of this meym'mayakkam theory. Since Cakti, Pakti, and Mukti are Sanskrit words used to express devotional, Tamil Devotional Literature has been chosen as the subject for this study.  Tamil Devotional kinds of literature like Tēvāram, Tiruvācakam, Tirumantiram, Tiruppukaḻ, Vināyakar Akaval, Tiruvaruṭpā, Tāyumāṉavar mentioned the words Cakti, Pakti, and Mukti as Catti, Mutti, Patti where it clearly expressed Tolkāppiyam’s theory of meym'mayakkam has been implemented in them.
