The Usage of ‘Kutriyalikaram’ in Thirukkural

‘Thirukkural’, authored by Thiruvalluvar, is an ancient Tamil literary work on ethics. Essentially, the ‘Thirukkural’ is a guide to life. This study aims to identify and explain the grammatical feature known as ‘Kutriyalikaram’ as it appears in the ‘Thirukkural’. This is a qualitative study. The key finding of this research is the identification of the usage of ‘Kutriyalikaram’ within the ‘Thirukkural’. The work comprises a total of 133 chapters. For this study, ten couplets from each of the following chapters were selected for analysis: Non-coveting (Vehkāmai), Abstinence from Meat (Pulāṉmaruttal), Truthfulness (Vāymai), Non-killing (Kollāmai), Spies (Orrāṭal), Friendship (Paḻaimai), Ignorance (Pullarivāṇmai), Not Censuring the Great (Periyāraip Piḻaiyāmai), Poverty (Nalkuravu), and Speaking with the Mind (Nenjoṭupulattal). This study helps to understand the usage of Kutriyalikaram as it appears in the Tirukkural.
