The Use of Case Markers in the Tirukkural: A Grammatical Perspective

ஆய்வுச்சாரம்
தமிழ் இலக்கணத்தில் வேற்றுமை உருபுகள் சொற்றொடரின் கருத்து அமைப்பிற்கு அடிப்படையாக விளங்குகின்றன. பெயர்ச்சொற்கள் கொள்ளும் உருபுகள், ஒரு சொல்லுக்கும் மற்றொரு சொல்லுக்கும் இடையே நிலவும் தொடர்பினை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன. தொல்காப்பியர் முதல் நன்னூலார் வரையிலான இலக்கண ஆசிரியர்கள் எட்டு வேற்றுமைகளை விவரிக்கின்றனர். திருவள்ளுவரின் திருக்குறள் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் சிகரமாகத் திகழும் தனிச்சிறப்பு மிக்க படைப்பாகும். இக்குறுங்காப்பியத்தில் காணப்படும் வேற்றுமை உருபுகளின் பயன்பாட்டை இக்கட்டுரை ஆராய்கிறது. தர அடிப்படையிலான ஆவண பகுப்பாய்வு (Qualitative Document Analysis) முறையில் இவ்வாய்வு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது. இரண்டாம் வேற்றுமை முதல் ஏழாம் வேற்றுமை வரையிலான உருபுகளின் பயன்பாட்டினை இருபதிற்கும் மேற்பட்ட குறள்களின் வழி எடுத்துக்காட்டி, அவற்றின் இலக்கணப் பின்னணியும், பொருள் வெளிப்பாடும் இக்கட்டுரையில் பகுப்பாய்வு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. திருவள்ளுவர் உருபுகளை வெளிப்படையாகவும், சில இடங்களில் தொக்கி நிற்கும் முறையிலும் ஆற்றலுடன் கையாண்டுள்ளார் என்பதை இவ்வாய்வு வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. இதன் மூலம் திருக்குறளின் இலக்கணச் செழுமையும், மொழித்திறனும் மேலும் தெளிவாகின்றன.

Abstract
Case markers play a fundamental role in determining the syntactic and semantic structure of expressions in Tamil grammar. The case markers attached to nouns indicate the grammatical relationship between one word and another within a sentence. Tamil grammarians, from Tolkappiyar to Nannular, have described eight grammatical cases. The Tirukkural of Tiruvalluvar is a distinctive classical work that occupies a prominent place in Tamil literature. This study examines the use of case markers in the Tirukkural. The research was conducted using a Qualitative Document Analysis approach. The study illustrates the use of case markers from the second case to the seventh case through more than twenty selected couplets from the Tirukkural. It further analyses their grammatical functions and the meanings conveyed through their usage. The findings reveal that Tiruvalluvar has employed case markers effectively, both explicitly and, in certain instances, through ellipsis or implicit case marking. The study further demonstrates the grammatical richness and linguistic sophistication of the Tirukkural, highlighting the skilful use of Tamil grammatical structures in expressing meaning with precision and conciseness.
