Abstract
This research article examines the dual role played by devadasis in medieval Tamil society and the contradictions they encountered, as reflected in chitrilakkiyam (minor literary genres). Early inscriptions indicate that devadasis were recognized within temple life and regarded as auspicious figures. However, later inscriptions reveal allegations of moral decline and their exploitation by temple authorities. This transformation is emphasized in minor literary works such as Thanipadal Thirattu and Viralividu Thoothu. In the writings of poets like Arunagirinathar and Kalamegam, as well as in several Viralividu Thoothu compositions (Deivachilaiyar, Muvaraiyan, Sethupathi, Nannavur, and Koolappanayakkan), devadasis are portrayed on the one hand as admired for their beauty and artistic skills, and on the other as subjected to sexual exploitation, economic decline, and social criticism. Through a combined reading of these literary sources, this study highlights how devadasis became trapped between the patriarchal, religious, and economic structures of medieval Tamil society, and how their “sacred” status gradually deteriorated over time.
